Throughout the Foundation Stage, personal and social skills development is given an extremely high profile. Discussions with the children concerning issues such as sharing, being angry, and helping each other are considered essential and often approached through circle time, stories, and the use of puppets. All staff know a consistent approach is required to promote sound personal and social development. Children are helped and encouraged to become independent regarding their own needs.
Talking and other aspects of literacy will be emphasized throughout the curriculum. The approach is holistic so that children will discover the connections between the spoken work, reading and writing. Language is essential for clarifying thoughts, expressing ideas and feelings, and interacting with peers. Details of the opportunities to develop these skills are incorporated in the planning documents.
Children can access gym equipment and participate in various movement activities within their setting. They participate in a weekly Physical education session and a daily movement activity after lunch. There is also the opportunity to use a variety of play equipment. Children may also enjoy Physical Education sessions led by a Physical Education specialist (coaches). Consideration is also given to developing fine motor skills, with ample opportunity for using scissors, threading, etc., and to developing a correct pencil grip.
Children have plenty of opportunities to engage in rhymes and songs. They have a daily story and a pre-reading activity and then take their chosen book to share at home. This entails a daily session following plans suitable for their ages and stages of development. Children are taught to read and write letter sounds and blends using various methods. Phonics schemes and phases are part of daily activities. All four classes have a regular story and have free access to the book area.
It is recognized that children need to be involved in a variety of practical mathematical experiences to develop their understanding and expand their problem-solving skills. Attention is focused on basic number skills, calculation, measurement, shape, and space. Children will participate in activities, giving them a practical way of developing their understanding of numbers and quantities.
All classes have easy access to various tools and materials, providing an environment for exploration and investigation. Understanding the World is often explored through the term’s topic, alongside seasonal observations. In the setting, children get to know their setting locality and also have visits from people of various occupations, including their parents.
The importance of allowing time and space for the children to express curiosity and expand their ideas is recognized. Creative activities are often pursued through the termly topics and at the children’s instigation. Children have frequent access to musical instruments and are encouraged to listen to a wide range of music. Singing together for enjoyment is greatly encouraged. All children have a weekly dance session.
In the Foundation Stage, children learn actively through play and exploration throughout a thematic curriculum. Care is taken to ensure that there is ample scope for personal, physical, social, and emotional development rooted in values at every step. Our children find the setting an extension of the home and are curious, communicative, and creative.
